HOW TO USE THE BASIC SKILLS SERIES (The Series with the OWL)

If you, as a parent, seriously wish your children to achieve the very best in their education, then you must become proactive and involved. You cannot leave this responsibility to others! Working together as a team with this goal in mind, you and your children can make this happen, and not just hope for it to happen!

NOTES

The best way to make it happen is to use the Basic Skills Series by Peter Howard and Associates, published by Coroneos Publishing Company P/L. This series (also known as the Aim for Excellence Series – The Series with the Owl) is the original, the best selling and the most respected series throughout Australia and New Zealand for parents to help their children at home. It is also being used in many countries of the world.

It is a collection of some 130 workbooks in nearly every subject and at all levels for children from Pre School to Year/Grade 10. The workbooks are well known for containing content of the highest standard, they are self instructional and have answers, making it easy for parents to help their children.(Beware of imitations/substitutes labeled ‘Basic Skills’ or carrying the words ‘Excellence in…’)

METHOD OF USING THE SERIES

Our web site:

Lists all titles in Year/Grade Order and/or by Subject
Gives the Contents of the work covered by each title
Details the Basic Skills Titles by Item Number
Lists the Educational CDs currently available

From this site, for each child, make a selection of a number of books in different areas of study – say a set of 4/6 books in early years and a set of 6/8 books in later grades. ( Do not select just one book for each child and ask your children to work through them. They will probably get tired of doing the same type of work.) By selecting books in different areas, your children will learn more because they are continually meeting different challenges. (To help you in these selections, some recommended sets are listed later.)

Remove (or tape up) the Answers to each book, and mark them with the appropriate item number. You use these to check your children’s work.

Ask your children to do the first exercise from each book selected in Set 1 and then give you these for correction. (Do not allow them to ask you questions whilst doing these exercises; you need to find any gaps in their knowledge at this stage.) You must check the Answers very thoroughly and then give appropriate help and advice!

When you are satisfied that your children have understood every concept in the first exercise from each book in Set 1, then ask them to do the second exercise from each book. You correct, and so on until all books in Set 1 are completed

Then make other selection(s) of books as stated in point 1 above. Call the selections Sets 2, 3. Ask your children to go on to the books in Sets 2, 3 working through them as for Set 1.
You should try to put aside sufficient time daily for your children to do this work.

They should do one exercise from each book in Set 1 (and later in Sets 2, 3) each day if possible. If this schedule is maintained then the books in Set 1 will be finished in about 6-8 weeks, and similarly for Sets 2,3.
Final Note: If your children receive your support in their work from the Basic Skills Series, then there is no doubt whatsoever that their resulting marks and achievements will please you enormously.

These books will give your children a distinct advantage in knowledge as well as that much-needed confidence to succeed and tremendous enthusiasm to achieve their potential. Their positive attitude to work and their marked improvement in standards will make all your efforts worthwhile.

After all, isn’t that what we want for our children? That they should be successful and happy in their lives!
