Why Phonics is so valuable to Learn to Read, Write and Spell
The Australian report of the “National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy”, released on 8th December 2005, was extremely critical of the way children are being taught to read. The report recommended that schools return to “systematic, direct phonics instruction” so that children master the alphabetic code-breaking skill needed for reading.
On 8th December, 2005 Brendan Nelson, the Federal Education Minister, unveiled a strategy to reintroduce phonics around the nation. He said that he believed the national literacy levels were unacceptable and teaching methods were failing children. He stated that as a result 30% of children were leaving the school system functionally illiterate. He also admitted that many teachers had not been taught how to teach phonics to children.
Many schools have been teaching a limited form of phonics for some time, along with the whole language approach, as a means of decoding (reading). The limited nature of what they teach has lead many educators to believe that the phonetical approach does not work since there are too many exceptions. When a complete phonetical approach is taken there are few exceptions and most of these can be easily learnt.
Phonetics is the basis for reading. Without the knowledge of all the sounds, single, double and multiple and the spelling rules that apply to them, children are left with inadequate tools for reading. Phonics supplies them with the basis for decoding unfamiliar words and also for spelling them. The wealth of information available today demands that children be able to read accurately and comprehend well. If they are struggling with words and substituting others they will be unable to adequately understand this information.
At the end of last year a complete phonics programme, the Learn to Read, Write and Spell series was released. This is a series of seven workbooks, that enable children to progress logically through all the phonetical sounds, learning the spelling rules as they progress.
The biggest advantage of the Learn to Read, Write and Spell series is that it does not assume that the parent or teacher has any previous knowledge. All the information required to teach a child is contained in the workbooks. Unlike most phonics programmes, reading passages keyed to the sounds already taught, have been included. Only thirteen sight words are taught. These enable the student to begin reading faster.
The books are well illustrated and contain plenty of written exercises. Simple tests at the beginning of each book help with placement of the student allowing the books to be used for a variety of ages and abilities. Spelling rules are included and a summary of these rules are included in each book so they can be detached and kept once a workbook is completed.
